Hot take: most people plant mint in the ground and then act surprised it takes over
Last spring my neighbor gave me a little pot of spearmint and said just stick it in the dirt by the fence. I did, and by August it had runners 3 feet out in all directions, choking out the phlox I put there in 2022. Turns out mint sends out stolons underground and one plant can spread 5 feet or more in a single season, and no amount of pulling the tops does anything if you leave the roots. I dug it all up, potted the survivors, and sank the pots into the bed with the rims above soil level so it can't jump. Anyone else got a trick that actually stops it, or do I just rip it out every month forever?
