Stick your finger in the dirt, that's the only way. Those fancy meters never get the moisture deep down right. I gave up on gadgets after my third one failed and just started lifting the pot to feel the weight... works every time.

Is it really that serious though? I mean, I get that a moisture meter isn't perfect, but mine has been good enough for years. It tells me if the soil is wet or bone dry, which is really all I need. Lifting pots sounds like a hassle for bigger plants, and my finger can't reach the bottom of a deep pot anyway. I'd rather just replace a cheap gadget every few years than play guessing games with the weight.
