Vent: My friend in Portland called my orchid care 'plant abuse'

She pointed out I was watering my Phalaenopsis twice a week, which was drowning the roots. I switched to the ice cube method, using three cubes once a week, and it's finally putting out a new spike. Has anyone else had a friend give you harsh but correct plant advice?

Wait, isn't the ice cube method actually bad for orchids too?

Didn't some orchid society put out a warning about that?

That ice cube warning is real, my friend did the same thing to me. I was killing a peace lily with kindness, watering it every other day because the leaves looked sad. Turns out it was sad from root rot. She told me to stick my finger in the dirt and only water when it's bone dry two inches down. Felt like a scolding, but @the_jade is right, sometimes the "easy" fix is just another problem. Now the thing is actually flowering.
