Does brick really need to be wet before laying, or is that just old school?
Had a guy on a job in Phoenix last month tell me soaking brick is a waste since we use type S mortar anyway. He said dry brick pulls water too fast and the mortar never sets right, but my old foreman always made us dunk them in a trough first. I've laid both ways and honestly the soaked ones seem to bond better, but maybe I'm just seeing what I want to see. Anyone got a real answer or a test they trust?
Oh sure, next he'll tell you ladders are a scam too. The soaked ones DO bond better, that's just how masonry works, the brick pulls moisture out of the mortar before it can cure. Your old foreman knew what he was doing.
