Just realized I've laid over 50,000 bricks in the last two years, and honestly, that number feels kinda hollow.
It's a big count, but it just reminds me that speed and volume are what get praised, not the quality of the joints or the pride in a perfectly plumb wall, so has anyone else felt like the real milestones get overlooked?

Funny you mention that, my uncle was a mason for forty years. He always said the only walls he remembered were the ones that gave him trouble, the tricky ones nobody else saw. Guess we all measure our own work different.

That's a really sharp point about memory and trouble. Makes me wonder if the easy walls are forgotten because they become part of the background, just another solid thing in the world. The tricky ones stick with you because you had to solve them, so they stay as a story in your head, not just a thing you built. Your uncle was remembering his own thinking, not just the bricks.

Reminds me of my friend's awful kitchen tile job.
