Hostels are overrated for solo travel now, hear me out
I used to swear by hostels when I was hitting up Europe on the cheap 5 years ago. But last trip to Lisbon in March, I tried a guesthouse for $35 a night through a local booking site, not a big chain. Way quieter, actual privacy, and I bought snacks from the market down the street to save on food. Anyone else ditch dorms for small private rooms on a budget?
Dorm life used to be about meeting people but now everyone's glued to their phones in the common room anyway. I stayed at a family run pensao in Porto for 28 euros and the owner gave me a handwritten map of where locals actually eat. That personal touch is totally gone from the big hostel chains where it's just a keycard and a QR code.
The real shame is those big hostel chains killed off the small places that had actual character. My mate stayed at a Generator hostel in Barcelona and said it felt like checking into a budget airline terminal - all grey floors and QR codes for everything. Meanwhile I've had hostel owners in Lisbon remember my name after two years and ask if I still liked that fado bar they recommended. Those handwritten maps and local tips are worth way more than a keycard and a generic list of tourist traps. Makes you wonder how long the small places can even survive when the chains can undercut them on price.
