Hostels vs. budget hotels, I finally switched sides in Lisbon

Used to swear by hostels for the social vibe, but after 3 nights of snoring and a stolen phone charger in Porto, I tried a $30 pension in Lisbon and actually slept. The privacy is worth skipping the free walking tour talk, has anyone else made this flip at 30?

Saw my buddy Dave go through this exact thing last year in Barcelona. He was 34, still booking hostels because he missed the party scene from his twenties. The last straw was some guy snoring like a chainsaw in the top bunk, plus he got bed bugs once and spent a week scratching in a hotel afterwards. He switched to a cheap pension for a few nights and said it felt weird at first, too quiet. But after two days he admitted he actually remembered his mornings for once, no hangover from listening to someone argue about geopolitics at 2am. Now he books hostels only if he's traveling with a group, otherwise it's budget hotels all the way. The social stuff is nice when you're 22 and single, but at some point you just want a door that locks and a pillow that doesn't smell like someone's travel towel. Sleep beats conversation every time once you hit your thirties. It's not even close.
