Question about the $6 airport trick that backfired on me in Denver

Two summers ago I tried to skip the $45 airport train in Denver by taking a city bus that stopped a mile from the terminal, and I had to sprint with my duffel in 95 degree heat. I made it to the gate soaked in sweat and the gate agent said "sir, you look like you swam here," then let me board anyway. Honestly the $39 I saved went straight to a $12 airport sandwich and a $9 water, so I basically broke even. Has anyone actually pulled off the bus-to-airport move without showing up looking like a wreck?
