My buddy Dave did the exact same thing in Rome last spring, took the train from Fiumicino for like 8 euro instead of the 55 euro cab. He gets to Termini and realizes he left his passport in the seat pocket. Took him two days and a trip back to the airport to get it, and he had to eat the cost of a new train ticket anyway. Still swears the metro was the right call though.
