The $3 hostel breakfast that made me stop booking free ones

Hostel in Lisbon last spring. They advertised free breakfast. Turns out it was stale bread and instant coffee. I paid $3 extra at the cafe next door and got fresh pastries, eggs, and real espresso. That saved me from hangry mornings for the rest of the trip. Now I check reviews for the word 'breakfast' before I book anywhere. Anyone else skip the free meal and grab something cheap nearby instead?

Wait, do people actually eat that sad hotel toast anymore? I learned the same thing in Prague last year, the "free" spread was literally just bread and some watery jam. Now I check the map for a bakery within two blocks and budget 5 bucks for a proper breakfast, worth every cent when you're walking 20k steps a day.
