Why I stopped booking flights through third party sites after one disaster

I used to always go with sites like Kayak or Priceline to save like $30 per flight. But last summer I booked a trip to Denver through one and my return flight got cancelled with no notice. The airline said they couldn't help me because the third party handled the booking. Spent 6 hours on hold over 2 days just to get rerouted. Now I book direct through the airline even if it costs a bit more. Anyone else had a nightmare with third party bookings?
