I heard a coworker say they 'just swipe' for groceries and it clicked for me.

They were complaining about their credit card bill, and I realized my cash envelope system for food is the only reason I'm not overspending. I put $125 in the envelope each Friday and that's it for the week. How do you keep your grocery spending from getting out of hand?

Is it really that big of a deal though? Swiping a card for food seems pretty normal. What's the worst that could happen?

Seriously, nora_taylor79, have you ever had to call your bank to report fraud? It's not just a quick call. You're on hold forever, then you have to wait for a new card in the mail. Meanwhile, you can't use your money for days.

My cousin's card got skimmed at a gas station last year and they drained $500 before he noticed. The worst that could happen, nora_taylor79, is you're stuck with a locked card while the bank investigates, and you can't buy anything. It's a huge hassle to update all your automatic payments too. Why risk it when paying cash is so much simpler for small stuff?
