Unpopular opinion: I chose a gas stove over induction and it nearly burned my house down

Ngl I used to be one of those gas or nothing people but honestly @king.derek you make a really good point. Never thought about the fire risk that way but yeah a wooden spoon catching fire sounds terrifying. Might have to give induction another look.

Hostel loyalty programs vs skipping them entirely

Had the exact same thing happen in Prague last summer. Paid 10 euros a night at a little family run place with no website, just a sign. The HI place wanted 25 euros and had a 30 minute wait for the bathroom in the morning. I don't get the hype about loyalty points when you can just walk into any random hostel and get a better deal. Plus those independent places usually have more character and the owners actually care if you're having a good time. Seems like loyalty programs are just a way to make you feel trapped into paying more for the same bed.

Broke down 40 chickens at the shop before I noticed the joint trick

My dad was the same way with everything, and honestly I kind of respect it. There's something to be said for knowing how to do stuff the hard way, even if you never actually have to do it that way again. Like, that auger is great until it breaks down or you're in a spot where you can't get a machine to, and then you're stuck. I've seen so many people who only know how to use the fancy tool and then they're totally helpless when something goes sideways. Not saying you gotta suffer for no reason, but there's a difference between being stubborn and being resourceful. Maybe it's just me but I think that summer of digging gave you a skill most people don't have anymore.

Went back to a job last week and found raccoons had chewed through my cable run

Wait, you guys are dealing with actual squirrels? And here I thought my problem was bad when I found out mice were nesting inside my wall jacks and shorting out the connections. Have you checked if the squirrels are actually after the cables for a specific reason, like maybe they're using the insulation for nesting material or something? I had a buddy who painted his cables with a hot pepper oil mix and the rodents left them alone completely. Might be worth trying before you go full metal conduit on everything, because that spray foam trick only works if they haven't already made a highway in your walls.
