My brother told me to track every single coffee for a month

He said it was stupid to worry about small stuff, but I did it anyway. Turns out I was spending over $80 a month just on lattes from the place near my office. I cut that down to two a week and put the extra $50 straight into my car fund. Anyone else get shocked by how much a small habit really costs?

Over $80 a month" is a real eye-opener, good for you.

Remember when a coffee was like two bucks? I saw a latte for SEVEN dollars last week and almost fell over. My grocery bill has doubled for the same stuff I always buy. It's wild how normal it feels now to just hand over so much more money.

Yeah, I used to just shrug and pay whatever at the register. Seeing a number like @marybaker mentioned, actually adding it up per month, makes it impossible to ignore. It shifts from a vague feeling of things costing more to seeing a real chunk of your budget just gone. That kind of math is what finally got me to start cutting back on some of those daily buys. It's one thing to know prices are up, another to see your own total.
