That 30% off coupon almost cost me $80 extra

I heard two guys at the auto parts counter yesterday bragging about a 15% off coupon they stacked with a sale. The clerk didn't say anything, but I did the math in my head and their final price was higher than the regular shelf price. I checked my own receipt from last week and the same thing happened to me with a 30% off code on a brake kit. The sale had already dropped the price below the coupon threshold, so the discount applied to the inflated base price. I called the store manager and he refunded me the difference, but only after I pushed for 20 minutes. Anyone else catch a retailer doing this trick with stacked coupons and sale items?
