My grandpa said to skip the expensive rain jacket and he was dead right

Back in 2018 my grandpa told me not to drop $300 on that Arc'teryx shell I was eyeing up. Said a basic Columbia with a good DWR treatment would do the same thing for me here in Seattle. Three years later and I've worn that $80 jacket through 40+ days of drizzle and it's still keeping me dry. Anyone else find that the cheap stuff sometimes works just as good as the fancy gear?

Oof, that "40+ days of drizzle" hit close to home. Your grandpa sounds like he knew exactly what he was talking about. It's funny how the expensive stuff tries to solve problems most of us don't actually have.

Used to be one of those people chasing the high-end rain jackets until I took a trip to the coast and got soaked anyway lol. @wendy_jackson your grandpa's advice is the real deal, cheap stuff works just fine for normal life. Now I just grab a basic anorak from the hardware store and it keeps me dry through the same drizzle the expensive ones can't handle. Funny how a little common sense from someone who lived through it beats all the marketing in the world.
