Wasted $75 on a 'universal' lens spanner that just stripped the threads on a Contax mount
The cheap metal was too soft and it mangled the slot before I even felt real resistance. Anyone know a solid brand for a proper JIS-style tool that won't wreck vintage gear?

Been there, stripped a lens mount with a bad tool once. People forget to check if the tool itself has a warranty or a hardness rating. A real JIS tool should be marked, sometimes they just stamp it on cheap metal. Try looking for old watchmaker or machinist supply brands, they often made small, precise tools that work on camera parts.

Yeah, the hardness rating is key. I learned that after a bad screwdriver ruined a camera's base plate. Now I only buy from brands like Moody or Vessel for JIS stuff. Their tips are actually the right shape and don't round out.

Ugh, that's rough. Holly_henderson86 is right about hardness, but maybe also check the tool's actual fit before you press down?
