Appreciation post: My neighbor called my new sleeping bag 'overkill for the Sierra'
He said he's been fine for years with a 40-degree bag and just wears more layers. I bought a zero-degree bag for a trip next month and now I'm second-guessing the whole purchase. Anyone have experience with layering versus a heavy bag for summer in the mountains?

Well, I read an article that totally backs up @drewsullivan's point about those cold Sierra nights.

Honestly, your neighbor has a point (I've done the same thing for years). A good sleep system with layers is way more flexible than one heavy bag.

Oh man, that neighbor is giving you some seriously bad advice. I tried the layering thing ONCE with a light bag and spent the whole night shivering my butt off, even in July. A zero degree bag for the Sierra in summer is NOT overkill, it's being smart. Those nights can get way colder than people expect, and being warm is the difference between a good trip and a miserable one. You bought the right gear, don't let someone else's weird pride make you freeze.
