Pro tip: I tried cooking bacon on a campfire rock instead of a pan and it worked way better than I expected
Went camping at Ricketts Glen State Park two weekends ago and forgot my cast iron skillet at home on the counter. I had a pack of bacon and no pan so I found a flat rock near the fire ring, let it heat up for about 15 minutes, and laid the strips right on it. The bacon came out crispy in like 4 minutes with zero sticking and honestly better than my skillet at home. Cleanup was just wiping the rock with a rag instead of scrubbing grease for 20 minutes. I get that not every rock is safe to cook on, you gotta avoid ones from wet areas or with cracks that could pop. Next trip I'm trying eggs on the same rock but I'm worried they'll just run everywhere, has anyone pulled that off?
Skip the eggs unless you build a little wall of rocks around the edge first, because raw egg will just race across a flat rock and burn before you can scoop it. Shape a shallow bowl with smaller stones packed tight around your cooking rock, then pour the egg into that pocket so it stays put while the bottom sets. Let the rock get hot enough that a drop of water dances off it before you crack anything on there.
