Question about the $180 I dropped on a pocket hole jig for face frames
Bought the Kreg K5 setup plus the face frame clamp deal about 8 weeks ago because a guy on a job in Reno swore it was the only way to hang face frames anymore. Used it on one kitchen and the screw tips kept blowing out the stiles on this cheap maple, blew out 6 of them before I gave up and went back to my old biscuit and glue routine. That $180 bought me maybe one cabinet door and a whole lot of swearing, and the guy has not answered a single text since. Anyone else find these things only work on decent hardwood, or did I just get a bad batch of screws?
That $180 bought me maybe one cabinet door and a whole lot of swearing, man that line hit close to home because my K5 has basically been a paperweight since April. I finally figured out mine only behaves on decent hardwood too, that cheap maple just splits right at the tip no matter how I set the collar depth. Turns out I was also driving them in too fast with the impact instead of a regular drill, which I felt pretty dumb about after blowing through half a box of screws. Honestly the self deprecating part is that I blamed the tool for weeks before admitting I was the problem. Maybe try a scrap of that maple with a slower drill and a test hole before you write the whole thing off.
