I laughed at oatmeal with cheese until I tried it at a diner in Des Moines

My buddy kept going on about putting a slice of cheddar in his steel cut oats and I thought he was messing with me. I mean, that crosses some line between soup and cereal or just breakfast in general, right? But last week I was at this greasy spoon near the bus depot in Des Moines and the cook said it's a Midwest thing. He threw a handful of shredded sharp cheddar into my bowl of oatmeal and I figured I'd just pick around it. But I took a bite and the saltiness of the cheese actually balanced the sweetness of the brown sugar I had on top. It was like a savory sweet combo that somehow worked, not quite soup territory but definitely a breakfast hybrid. Now I'm wondering if I should try it with cold cereal like granola, or is that taking it too far? Has anyone else tried cheese on something that normally doesn't belong?

Well I'll be. That reminds me of the time my aunt put crushed up potato chips on her chocolate ice cream. We all stared at her like she lost her mind but she swore by it. The salt and crunch really does something to the sweet. I never tried oats with cheese myself but it makes sense when you think about how people put butter and salt on oatmeal already. That's basically the same idea just in a different form.
