Turns out the number came from a 1965 marketing campaign for a device called manpo-kei, not from any actual health research, so why do we still treat it like a magic number?
Man that is such a letdown but honestly not that surprising. I remember reading the manpo-kei thing too, it was basically a Japanese company selling a step counter and the name just meant 10,000 steps meter. So the whole number came from a catchy ad slogan and we just ran with it for 60 years. My old coach used to yell at us about hitting 10k and now I feel like I got lied to in gym class.
