My mechanic said my brakes were fine, so I ignored the grinding noise for 3 weeks. Now I keep wondering if trusting him was the real mistake.
I told myself the sound was just rust on the rotors because he'd checked them at my 60k service in March, and then I drove my kids to soccer practice in that car. When the pedal finally went soft on I-35 near Waco, the shop found metal on metal and a $1,200 bill. Has anyone else caught themselves trusting an "it's fine" just to avoid the hassle of a second opinion?
Trusting him was the real mistake" is kind of a stretch here. A mechanic checks your brakes at 60k, they look fine, then three weeks later you hear grinding. That's not really on him unless he missed something obvious, which you can't know from the post. Brakes can go from okay to metal on metal faster than people think, especially if you're hauling kids around town all day. The bigger thing is you heard grinding for three weeks and kept driving, that's the part that cost you the $1,200, not the guy in March.
