Question about the idea that more expensive cables always sound better

I was at a hi-fi shop in Portland last month listening to speakers. The guy there told me I needed $200 speaker cables to get good sound. I asked if I could try my cheap ones from Amazon first. He said it would be a waste of time. I tried both anyway in the demo room and honestly could not tell a difference. He got annoyed and walked away. Has anyone else tested this and actually heard a change?

Did you try swapping them back and forth real quick? I used to think I had golden ears until I spent an hour A/B testing Monster cables against some old lamp cord I found in my garage. My wife walked in and asked if I was having a stroke because I was just staring at the wall switching wires. Honestly I couldnt hear a damn thing different and now I just use the lamp cord for everything. Ngl my hifi setup is more of a vibe than a science project at this point.
