Burned my rice so bad I turned it into dinner for $2 and it was actually good

Was making cheap stir fry last night and got distracted by a call. Rice went totally black on the bottom of the pot. Instead of crying over 50 cents of store brand rice I scraped off the top half that was still okay, fried it with an egg and some frozen peas. Added soy sauce and sriracha. Honestly tasted better than my planned dinner lol. Anyone else salvage a kitchen fail into something edible?

I read a food science article recently that talked about how browned or slightly burnt food actually creates new flavor compounds that people find really appealing. @taylor_young is totally right about that smoky depth, it's basically controlled charring like you'd get on grilled veggies or roasted peppers. Next time try adding a tiny splash of fish sauce and some garlic to that mix, it really kicks the savory notes up.

Dude you basically made fancy fried rice without the guilt of wasting food... win win in my book lol.

Yeah "fancy fried rice" is exactly right, I was surprised how much the burnt bits actually added a smoky depth to the whole thing. Might have to accidentally burn my rice more often lol.
