My grocery store's clearance rack changed my whole dinner planning system

I mean it really hit me that night while I was stirring the pot. I always thought I was being smart by buying the cheapest stuff possible but I never thought about buying extra when things hit rock bottom prices. Now I check the clearance section first at every store I go to. It's not even about saving money at this point, it's like a little game I play with myself. Store brand canned veggies are fine for soup but I still won't buy store brand pasta sauce, that stuff is always watery. Anybody else got certain things they refuse to go generic on even when the price is right?

Hit the clearance rack like it's a treasure hunt every time I walk in. Store brand canned tomatoes are fine, but I won't touch generic ketchup. That stuff is basically red sugar water. Learned that one the hard way with a whole bottle of disappointment. For clearance deals, I always check the date first. Some of those markdowns are about to expire that same day and you gotta have a plan to use it up or freeze it. Also watch for dented cans, those are usually the ones tossed on clearance and you don't want to risk botulism over a dime.

Oh I learned the ketchup lesson the HARD way too, bought a store brand thinking it was a bargain and ended up pouring what tasted like watery tomato candy on my fries. The clearance rack is basically my happy place, I will ADMIT I once bought a random spice blend there just because it was 75 cents off and then had zero idea what to do with it. Dented can rules are real though, I tried to save a buck on a dented can of beans once and spent the whole meal paranoid I was about to get sick, totally not worth it.

Ketchup is actually one of the few things I'll go generic on, been buying the store brand for years and honestly can't tell the difference when it's on a hot dog or burger. Maybe my taste buds are just broken. The clearance rack hunting is a sport though, I'll give you that.
