Gas station egg rolls used to be my go-to, now it's all about the bodega breakfast sandwiches
Back in 2019 I'd grab those 2 for $3 gas station egg rolls every morning before a job in Lynn, MA. They were dry and the texture was weird but they were cheap and got the job done. Around 2021 the prices jumped to $2 each and the filling got skimpy, so I switched to a bodega near the highway that does a $5 bacon egg and cheese on a roll. The bodega sandwich is way more filling and the lady there knows my order. Has anyone else ditched a long-time cheap eat for a new spot because the old one stopped being worth it?

...and that bodega lady remembering your order is half the battle right there. I had a similar thing happen with a halal cart near my old office in Queens. Used to get their chicken and rice bowl for $6 and the guy would have it ready with extra white sauce by the time I walked up. Then they changed ownership and the portions got tiny, the rice was always hard. Found a new cart three blocks away that does lamb over rice and the guy calls me "boss" and remembers I want the hot sauce on the side. Haven't looked back.

Nah, I gotta disagree a little. Sometimes the new spot with the guy calling you "boss" is cool but it never quite hits the same as the OG spot where they knew your order before you even opened your mouth. There's something about that old connection that's hard to replace even if the food gets a bit rough.
