Why does everyone sleep on the $2.50 bean and cheese tacos at the gas station on Culebra
I know this sounds like a stretch but last month I was driving back from my cousin's place out near SeaWorld and pulled into the Exxon on Culebra because my tank was basically empty. I grabbed two bean and cheese tacos from the little warmer by the register, mostly because I was starving and they were $2.50 each, and I honestly expected them to be sad and soggy. They were not. The tortillas were fresh, the beans had actual seasoning, and the salsa verde in the little cup on the side was better than what I've paid $9 for at sit down spots. I've been back four times since, and the guy behind the counter now just holds up two fingers when he sees my truck pull in. I get why people hype up the fancy taco trucks on St Mary's but I'd put these up against anything under ten bucks in this whole city. Is there some other random gas station or corner store in town I'm sleeping on, because I want to keep this streak going.
Gas station tacos are honestly the move and nobody wants to admit it. There's a Phillips over on Bandera near the HEB that does barbacoa on weekends only and the line backs up to the pumps by 7am, so go early or you're getting nothing. Also check the little mercado on Castroville Rd, they got a steam table in the back and the bean and cheese there is like a buck seventy five, salsa roja is fire. Pro tip on your Exxon spot though, ask the guy what day they get their tortillas delivered, because some of these places get fresh ones twice a week and the rest of the time they're pulling from the freezer. Go on a delivery day and it's a whole different taco. Keep that streak going man, cheap eats in this town are a real thing if you know where to look.
