Just switched my Tuesday city hall rant from the open mic to the public comment form, and I'm honestly shocked at the difference
For about two years I was one of those people who showed up to the open mic portion of our city council meetings in Council Bluffs and just let it rip for three minutes. Then in March a woman named Deb who runs the farmers market cornered me outside and said the clerks literally log the written comments into the agenda packet while the mic stuff mostly just goes into the minutes as "resident concerns." So I tried the online form for the first time two weeks ago about the crosswalk on 5th and it ended up in the actual packet with my name on it. The open mic gave me a rush but this actually got a traffic study on the agenda for the 18th. I still say the in person thing matters for cameras and turnout but I was wrong about which one moves the needle. Has anyone else switched over to written comments, and did your council actually respond or did it just sit there?
