DAE hit a number on their electric bill that made them finally look into heat pumps?
Got my January bill for my place in Duluth and it was $287, which is the most I have ever paid for one month of power. I knew the baseboard heaters were bad but I guess I never really added it up before. Now I am getting quotes for a cold climate heat pump and the numbers range from $8,000 to $14,000 after the rebates, which is a lot for me. For anyone who made the switch up north, did it actually cut your winter bill enough to matter, or am I better off just sealing the attic first?
Laughed at this because I did the exact same thing last winter, stared at my bill for five solid minutes like it owed me money. Duluth winters do not mess around and baseboard heat is basically just burning dollar bills in a metal box. Real talk though, sealing the attic is cheap and you will feel it right away, while a heat pump is a big bet that only pays off over years. Do the attic and air sealing first, then see where your bill lands before dropping eight grand on quotes. Worst case you saved some money anyway, best case the heat pump actually makes sense after.
