My uncle told me to skip the expensive smart thermostat and just get a basic programmable one for $40...

He said the energy savings would be the same if I actually programmed it, and after a year my gas bill dropped by about $80, so has anyone else found the simple, cheap tools work just as well for cutting home energy use?

Totally agree with your uncle. Smart thermostats are mostly just fancy toys for people who like gadgets. The real savings come from setting a schedule and sticking to it, not from checking the temperature on your phone. Why pay for features you'll never actually use? A cheap programmable one does the exact same job if you take two minutes to set it up.

But what about people who work odd hours or travel a lot? A fixed schedule falls apart if you're never home at the same time. The phone control might actually be useful then.

@juliag10, does your "fancy toys" view include homes where schedules change often?
