Was sure bamboo straws were a scam until I saw this data
I used to think all those eco-friendly swaps were just for clout. Like bamboo straws and beeswax wraps, thought they broke down just as bad as plastic. Then last month I read a study from some uni in California that said bamboo straws decompose in 4-6 weeks in a compost bin. Plastic straws take 200 years. That stat hit me hard because I always assumed "biodegradable" was just marketing fluff. Now I actually use them at home and my roommate calls me a hippie. Has anyone else gotten convinced by a random study you found online?

Have you actually tried composting those bamboo straws yourself? I ask because I looked into this after seeing similar claims and it turns out a lot of those studies are done in ideal conditions with industrial composting facilities that keep things hot and moist. Your average backyard compost bin won't hit those numbers. Mine took closer to three months and even then I had to break them up first. Not saying it's all a scam, just that real world results can be a lot slower than the lab numbers. Makes you wonder how many other eco-products are oversold the same way.

Yeah that tracks. I had basically the same moment with my own kitchen a few years back. I switched to silicone food bags because I was tired of throwing away ziplocs and the data on plastic leaching into hot food was enough to push me over the edge. I even started keeping a little compost bucket under the sink after I saw a video that showed how fast banana peels and coffee grounds turn into actual dirt. My wife still rolls her eyes when I dig through the trash to pull out a takeout container that I think could have been avoided. But honestly, once you see the numbers on how long that stuff sits in a landfill it really changes your whole outlook.
