What changed my mind about composting after 10 years of ignoring it
I was at the county fair last month and saw a demo from the local waste authority. A guy had two bins side by side - one with regular trash and one with food scraps mixed with leaves. After 60 days the compost bin was just dark soil. The trash still looked like trash. He said food in landfills makes methane and our county sends 40% of its waste as organics. I went home and built a bin that same weekend. Has anyone else had a moment where simple numbers finally got through to you?

Couldn't believe that 40% figure; that's almost half your trash.

And you know what's funny, I was just telling my neighbor about this the other day when his yard waste pile got way bigger than he expected after a storm. @gavina73, I bet that 40% is mostly stuff we don't even think about, like half-eaten sandwiches and random packaging.
