Tried single flute end mills on aluminum, went through 3 bits in one afternoon
Been running a 3 flute roughing bit for years on 6061, always worked fine. Saw some chatter online about single flute being the secret for aluminum so I ordered a few. First part came out like garbage, finish looked like a washboard. Thought it was a bad bit, changed it, same thing. Adjusted feeds three times, slowed the spindle down to like 6000 rpm, still tore up the surface. Those bits are sitting in a drawer now. Never had that issue with my old setup. What am I missing here, is there a specific chip load I should've been running? Been at this 12 years and that one threw me for a loop.
That "washboard" finish is usually a chip load thing, single flutes want a much bigger bite per tooth or they just rub and chatter. I bumped mine way up to around .005 to .008 per tooth on 6061 and the finish cleaned right up.
