Appreciation post: my uncle told me to build a calculator before touching any framework and he was dead right
When I was 19 my uncle in Akron handed me a copy of Java and said write a tip calculator with a loop before you touch any big framework. I ignored him for a bit, tried to jump straight into a React tutorial, and spent three days stuck on why my button did nothing. Then I went back and built his dumb calculator in an afternoon and suddenly loops made sense to me. Still keep that old file around when I get stuck on something new. Did any of you get one piece of advice that felt too simple at the time but turned out correct?
Tbh the part about keeping the old file around really got me. I did almost the exact same thing with a little guessing game I wrote in Python when I was learning. Spent weeks confused about why my functions kept returning nothing, turned out I never actually called them. Felt so dumb but once it clicked it clicked for good. Now whenever some new tool or library is kicking my butt, I go back and read that ugly old code and it calms me down. Your uncle sounds like he knew exactly what he was doing.
