Turn the near-disaster into a teaching moment about respect for other people's stuff. A quick, calm explanation about why it's special sticks better than just hiding it. The kid might actually remember not to touch things next time.

Also, what if you make the kid help clean it up? They see how much work it takes to fix things and might actually care next time.

Forcing a kid to clean could just build resentment, not respect. Some kids will only learn to be sneakier about touching stuff they shouldn't.
