Rant: I stopped weighing beans and started using a shot glass, and my morning coffee got better
So for about 2 years I was that guy with the $22 scale on the counter, timing every pour, chasing a 1:16 ratio like my life depended on it. The problem was I was still getting sour cups half the time, especially with the medium roast from the shop on 5th in my neighborhood. Last month my scale died, batteries leaked everywhere, and I was too lazy to drive to the store, so I grabbed a shot glass from the cabinet, filled it with beans to the same line every single time, and just went with it. The weird part is the cups came out sweeter and more even, like the scale was making me fuss too much and overthink the pour. I tried going back to the scale last week and the coffee tasted flat, so I put it in a drawer. Now I just eyeball the water too, fill the kettle to the same spot, and it works out to right around 16 ounces in the cup. Has anyone else ditched the scale and gone back to volume, or am I just fooling myself here?
