I used to judge people for only reading the big two until I saw my own collection.
I was reorganizing my bookshelf last month and realized every single comic I owned was either Marvel or DC. I had this whole speech ready about how 'real fans' explore indie publishers, but I hadn't bought a single Image or Dark Horse book in years. It hit me that I was the exact kind of gatekeeper I complained about. How do you actually branch out from the mainstream stuff without it feeling like homework?

Honestly, I don't see the big deal about sticking to Marvel and DC. Those are the characters and stories I grew up with and love. Branching out just for the sake of it feels forced, like you're trying to win some fan contest. I read comics to enjoy myself, not to fill out a checklist.

Wow, reading only two comic companies is like eating nothing but plain toast forever.

Seriously? That toast line is perfect. It's not about some checklist, it's about missing out on amazing food. Sticking to just the two big ones means you never even try the steak or the pizza. You're telling me you'd turn down a great story just because the logo is different? That's just limiting your own fun for no good reason.
