Just realized the guy who runs my local comic shop has been right about variant covers for 3 years and I finally get it
I go to Tommy's shop in Rochester every Wednesday. For like 3 years he's been telling me variant covers are a trap. I always brushed it off because some of them look really cool. Last month I finally sat down and counted my pull list. Out of 47 books, 31 were variants I paid extra for. I went back and checked what the standard covers sell for now on eBay and most of my variants aren't worth more than the regular ones. Some are worth less. Tommy never pushed me on it, just mentioned it when I'd grab a variant off the wall. I think what he meant was that the cover art is cool but the story inside is the same either way. So now I only grab a variant if it's the same price, which is almost never. Anyone else have a shop owner who was quietly right about something for years before you caught on?
