TIL that guy at my local shop was right about Silver Age books

Back in March a collector at Cosmic Comics in Austin told me to stop chasing slabbed 9.8s and grab raw readers instead. I thought he was just pushing his own junk until I actually tried buying a beat up copy of Amazing Spider-Man #50 for 40 bucks. The story is the same whether it's a 2.0 or a 9.0, and now I have way more cash for keys. Has anyone else had a comic shop regular give you advice that actually saved you money?

Yeah, "the story is the same whether it's a 2.0 or a 9.0" is exactly what I tell people now. I read this article on CBR a while back where a guy had a near mint copy of a classic Black Panther issue and a beat up one, and he said the only difference is what you pay. I grabbed a 1.5 copy of Fantastic Four Annual #6 for 30 bucks last summer and the story hit just as hard as my buddy's 8.0. People get way too caught up in the grade and forget you can still enjoy the art and the writing. Plus, a beat up book has character, you know? It feels like it survived something.

Used to be all about chasing high grades myself, but finding a beat up copy of X-Men #137 for cheap changed my whole view. Reading it dog-eared and stained just made the story feel more real, somehow.
