A chat with a retired saturation diver changed how I see my own career path

I was helping out at the dive school last week and got talking to a guy who did sat diving back in the 80s. He said something like, 'The real skill isn't just doing the job down there, it's knowing when to say your piece topside.' He told me about a time in the Gulf where he spoke up about a frayed umbilical and they actually listened, delaying the job for a full day to fix it. It hit different because I'm always the quiet one on deck, just trying to get my tasks done. Made me think I should be more willing to voice a concern, even if it's not my direct job. Has anyone else had a moment where speaking up really mattered?

Had a similar thing on a pipeline job last year. Pointed out a valve that was tagged wrong during a pre-dive check. Supervisor grumbled but they swapped it. The paperwork was for a different pressure rating. It's your neck down there too.
