I finally counted my logged dives and hit 500 in the water off Port Aransas
I keep a little paper logbook in my truck and finally added up every entry since I started, came out to exactly 500 dives last month. The number that got me was 412 of those were shallow stuff under 60 feet, mostly inspections and hull scrubs in the Gulf. I always figured I had way more deep work than that, but it turns out I've spent most of my career in murky green water at 30 feet. Not saying shallow work doesn't matter, it pays the bills, but it made me wonder if I've been dodging the bigger jobs without noticing. Anyone else look back at their log and get surprised by where the hours actually went?
That shallow work is not dodging anything, it's the backbone of the whole Gulf operation. Those hull scrubs and inspections at 30 feet in murky green water are way harder than most deep dives if you ask me, zero viz plus tight spaces plus you're working the whole time instead of just floating down to look at something. 412 out of 500 sounds about right for someone who actually gets paid steady, the deep jobs are few and far between and half the guys chasing them are broke between gigs.
