Pro tip: Check your comms wire insulation after a season in brackish water

Pulled my backup comms set from the gear locker after 6 months and the jacket was completely brittle, cracked straight through to the copper. Anyone else seen this happen with the new 'eco' sheathing material?

Ugh, my gear looks like that even without the saltwater.

Yeah, that's a solid tip. I used to just rinse gear with fresh water and call it good, never really checked the actual jacket. Had a primary comms line fail on me last year in a similar way, total brittle mess. Now I strip back a little section of the sheath on my backups at the end of every season to check. The new materials seem to break down way faster in the salt.

Totally, it's wild how fast some of that stuff goes. I've started marking my gear with the date I bought it, so I know when to really start checking it over.
