Question about a weird power supply failure in a client's gaming PC

I was at a client's house in Tacoma last week, and their new build would power on for exactly three seconds then shut down. I swapped in my own PSU and it booted fine, but their unit tested okay on my bench load tester. Has anyone else seen a PSU fail only under the specific load of that motherboard?

That bench tester only puts a basic load on it. A real motherboard can have weird power spikes during startup that a simple tester just doesn't catch.

Wait, you took a client's PSU all the way back to your bench? I would never haul a possibly busted unit back to my shop without testing it in the system first, that's a huge time waste.

Oh man, @riley_west, my buddy learned that lesson the hard way when a PSU passed his tester but fried a client's board on startup.
