Vent: Spent 6 months thinking thermal paste was a scam until I saw a 15 degree drop on my buddy's rig

My coworker Mike brought in his old gaming PC last week. It was hitting 95C under load and throttling like crazy. I told him it was probably just dust or a bad fan curve. He said nah, he had already cleaned everything but never changed the thermal paste since 2021. I was skeptical but he let me watch him reapply some Arctic MX-4. The before and after was insane. Idle went from 50C to 35C and load dropped to 80C flat within 10 minutes of stressing it. I always figured paste was just snake oil for enthusiasts. Now I'm kinda embarrassed I've been skipping it on my own builds. Anyone else have a moment where a simple fix made you look dumb?

Sawed through an old GPU bracket with a rusty hacksaw once because I was too lazy to walk to the hardware store for a proper screwdriver. Took like 20 minutes and I almost cut my thumb off. But hey, the card fit in the case after that. Kinda like your paste story, it's funny how we overcomplicate stuff or ignore the obvious fix until someone proves us wrong. I bet your buddy felt like a genius showing you that temp drop.

That rusty hacksaw story is brutal, man. I've totally been there (though with a dull knife on a case panel, not a saw). Next time, grab a cheap right-angle screwdriver from a hardware store - it's like 8 bucks and saves your hand from becoming a shish kebab. But seriously, your buddy must have felt like a king when he showed you that temp drop, just like you felt when that card squeezed in after all that effort.
