Update: my NES died mid game of Duck Hunt last Tuesday, so I tore it apart on the kitchen table
Last Tuesday I was 3 rounds into Duck Hunt and the screen went gray, which was the same thing it did back in 1990 when my cousin spilled Coke on it. I pulled the console apart on the kitchen table, and the 72 pin connector inside was so green with gunk that I could not believe it ever worked at all. I tried the old trick of bending the pins back with a tiny screwdriver, but two of them snapped clean off, so I ordered a $12 replacement connector off the internet instead. Now it runs every game I own except the one copy of Zelda that has been dead since middle school. Did any of you ever fix one of these by boiling the connector, or is that just a rumor the game store guy in Bakersfield made up?
Boiling the connector is not a rumor, it's a real trick that a lot of people swear by. The heat softens the plastic just enough that the metal pins spring back to their original shape, and you can get another year or two out of a connector that way. The catch is it only works if the pins are bent but still attached, and once you snapped two of them off your old one was done no matter what. Your $12 replacement is the better fix anyway since boiled connectors eventually go green again.
