The 30 day news blackout test in Denver changed my whole take on media
Last month I picked a choice between reading headlines every morning or going cold turkey on all news for 30 days. I live in Denver and my mail route has so many radios on, I figured I was immune to the spin. Turns out without the daily feed, my gut reactions to stories I caught later were totally different than before. One example: a city council vote I'd normally be furious about felt way less urgent when I heard it as a summary, not a live thread. It made me wonder if the panic is manufactured by the delivery, not the event itself. Has anyone else tried unplugging and noticed their opinions flip on stuff they were sure about?
I was the guy who checked five news apps before my coffee even finished brewing, and I swore I could read through the spin. Then I did three weeks off last spring after my wife hid my phone, and a zoning story that would've had me ranting at the kitchen table barely got a shrug out of me when I finally read it. Cutting the constant drip really did change how big things felt, so now I'm a lot slower to get worked up over the first headline I see.
