A veteran plumber in Cleveland showed me his pipe laser and I've been chasing that high ever since
I was doing a repipe on a 1920s duplex in Cleveland back in March and the old plumber they paired me with pulled out this little green pipe laser instead of a chalk line and level. He set it up in about 20 seconds and just said "watch this" while the rest of us were still measuring. I bought one the next week for $180 and it cut my drain slope layout time down to almost nothing. Now I'm wondering what other small tools I'm sleeping on because I got taught the old way. What's the one cheap tool that changed how you work?
Gotta disagree on the "cheap tool" framing. A $180 laser isn't cheap when you're the apprentice making $19 an hour, and honestly the old guy using a chalk line wasn't doing it wrong, he was doing it with what he had. I've watched guys lean on the laser so hard they can't shoot a slope with a level anymore when the battery dies mid-job. The tool didn't make you faster, knowing your layout did, the laser just removed the math. Learn the old way first, then let the laser save you time, not replace your brain.
