So my foreman Dale is one of those guys who thinks anything with a battery in it is for lazy people. Back in March we were doing a kitchen remodel in Boise and I showed up with a $180 self leveling laser level I picked up, and he flat out told me to put that toy away and grab a tape because lasers drift and real carpenters trust 25 feet of steel. I listened to him because he has been doing this since 1987 and I figured he knew something I did not. We snapped lines and measured by hand for the upper cabinets and spent close to 3 hours fighting one wall that was out of square by almost half an inch. When the homeowner walked in she put a straightedge on our line and it was off just enough that you could see a gap at the top of the cabinet run. Dale stood there quiet for a bit, then asked me to bring the laser out and we redid the whole layout in about 40 minutes and everything sat perfect. Now he borrows it every single job and tells the young guys it was his idea. Has anyone else had an old school guy come around on a tool like that, or do you just let them keep arguing?
Man, I used to be the same way about laser levels. I figured a tape never runs out of batteries and I can see the numbers with my own eyes, so why mess with it. Then I did a tile job on a floor that was way out of whack and spent an hour fighting lines before a buddy handed me his laser and it took ten minutes to sort out. That thing paid for itself on one job. Sounds like Dale just needed to see it himself instead of hearing it from you, and once he did there was no going back. Old dogs come around, they just do it on their own time.
