Saw a stat that said 40 percent of small GCs still do takeoff by hand, blew my mind
I was reading a survey from Dodge Data that came out in March and it said almost 40 percent of small general contractors are still doing takeoffs with a scale ruler and paper. That number floored me because I figured everyone had moved to digital by now, and honestly it made me feel better about our slow switch last fall. Are you guys still seeing paper plans on job sites or is it just the older crews holding out?
Wondering if that 40 percent is really about age or if it's more about the type of work these small GCs are chasing. Like are the paper guys doing mostly small residential remodels where a digital takeoff tool costs more than it saves? Because I get that, the subscription math doesn't work if you're bidding tiny jobs all year. But the flip side is I've seen 30 year old supers still print everything out because they just think faster with a highlighter in their hand. So which is it, is it old habits or is it actually the smart call for certain job sizes?
